We are not even surprised any more by all the press The Sartorialist is getting. (We’ve gotten some too back in the day). But just check out the ode he got today from Fashion Wire Daily’s Massimo O’Neil: “Everyone is talking about fashion blogs at the moment, even if most of them read like stream of consciousness fashion warbles from the seventh row. (Ed: jealous much?) One site with a difference, however, is The Sartorialist. Created by Scott Schuman five months ago, the Satorialist is essentially a men’s wear visual blog, which interprets fashion by concentrating on how editors, critics, buyers and models dress, rather than taking its lead from the catwalks. Blessed with a good eye, neat prose and the boundless energy of bloggers, Schuman is on track to 55,000 visitors/110,000 page views per a month.” Way to go, Scott! Photo: One of the Sartorialist’s street models: gorgeous coat, zillion dollar tote.

Sunday, February 19th, 2006Hmm. What would happen to Zink magazine if Steven Meisel did not exist? Who would they imitate?
I mean, I share their fascination with grey slouchy tights, but they even put the shoe in the same position! The imagination switch is definitely off on this one…

Sunday, February 19th, 2006Mean Time In London
Friday, February 17th, 2006Yes, shopping for Fall is a bit perverse right now but we can’t help it. On the wishlist are the wide leg trousers, with that Giles sweater and the pink zebra coat and maybe even that sexy pretty woman dress. (#2) Overall, it looks like the 1990’s are now officially retro.

Thursday, February 16th, 2006Fashion Stalking The Fashion Stylists
Thursday, February 16th, 2006Nobody takes style more seriously than these hauterlies. Some of them seem utterly schizophrenic in their dressing which only adds to their stylist status. Needless to say, I could look at them forever getting endless original ideas. It’s a lot of fun. Here we have a Dutch Elle Girl editor in Isabel Marant coat and vintage boots that look like the pair I won on Ebay the other day. And that asphalt satin dress on the right looks beautiful with the white shawl and shoes.
My favorite Kristin Rawson looks amazing as usual. It’s hard to miss her bleached Barbie ponytail in front row – cool wardrobe too.

Tuesday, February 14th, 2006Does the King of American Jet Set Style realize that this shorts & stripes ensemble currently sells at Forever 21 for a little more than $20 and has been around since Fall 2004? What a bore.
Executive Decision
Monday, February 13th, 2006Perhaps I’m just biased because of this embroidered dress on Gemma and Lily but there’s something to be said about the repetition of the message. Doesn’t this editorial photo look a zillion times better than the actual Balenciaga ad?
I wonder which part of the collection will sell better: the suits or the dresses?

Rocker Marilyn Manson will make his feature directorial debut on Phantasmagoria – The Visions of Lewis Carroll. In the film, Manson will play the author of “Alice in Wonderland.” Manson wrote the script with Anthony Silva and will score the music for the film, which wil tie the life of Lewis into his famous poem, “Phantasmagoria”. Fashion model Lily Cole will star as Alice, with Angelina Jolie in talks to play the Red Queen. Production is scheduled to begin this summer with locations in Europe. Welcome to Dowdyville
Sunday, February 12th, 2006Someone has to take away James Coviello’s glue gun: velvet ribbons, corsages, flimsy print dresses, almost the exact same knit shapes each season, all in muddy earth tones, it looks like every collection he has done for the last four years. It’s a vicious circle. I could write his Spring 2007 show review right now, I bet, I’d nail it.

Friday, February 10th, 2006
The Sartorialist, he knows how to take a flattering photo. I mean, have you ever seen a better looking Andre Leon? Or a happier looking Carine Roitfeld? Yes, he took a picture of her too. I’m in awe.
Worship Carine Roitfeld’s ankle boots here.

Just returned from tonights’ Jason Wu show which was very pretty in a tight-bodice-taupe-coctail-dress way with some lace thrown in the mix. I had the invite but a week at the Tents taught me to avoid the lines and the perpetually confused PR interns at check-in. Cutting the line is so much easier.
I had no time to write but Heatherette was a feast The Dreams come true in New York City theme didn’t really bring tears to anyone’s eyes (it was more Disney-cheesy as opposed to Galliano-campy) but the celebrity-gawking quota was certainly filled for a few years ahead:
We were introduced to the concept of Tinsley Mortimer (her faux-model runway strut is adorable), as well as Naomi Campbell (does she drink the blood of innocent newborns and where do I score some?!), Jay McCarrol (surpisingly friendly) and various America’s Next Top Model runner-ups (they get a real thrill out of people looking at them. Aww.) There were many many more TV and pop stars but I can’t even remember now. View entire collection here.
For next fashion week the plan is to sneak backstage and chat with all the models – that should put our fluent Russian to work.

Saw BCBG Max Azria and Zang Toi. BCBG’s still stuck in Fall ‘05: shorts, leggings, waist belts, some maxi, patent leather riding boots (those were hot), knee-highs, chunky knits and the seemingly obligatory look this season – a shapelss muumuu dress. Zang Toi delivered beautiful gowns as usual. Would love to have seen something directional but I get more inspiration from looking at Italian fashion girls that work at the tents than from any of the runways. Tonight we have Nanette Lepore and Heatherette! That should be a lot of fun. I’m off to style.com to check out last night’s Marc Jacobs. xxx
PS. Tonight I’m wearing a really fashion-forward outfit that most commoners would consider fugly. But I’ll wear it anyway because at the tents you can be sure that someone will outfug you! It’s a fashion madhouse!

Monday, February 6th, 200610 AM Carolina Herrera
Monday, February 6th, 2006Just watched the Carolina Herrera show. I was sitting next to a very charming buyer from Moscow’s Podium, Tatiana. Carolina Herrera shows certainly attract a lot of New York’s beaumonde. I loved all the Upper West Side dames in diamonds and tweed suits. They actually made the Tents look like the plastic surgery wing of Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital. Ivanka Trump should stop hanging out with them, she’s my age but dresses 45.
Daria opened the show in a Silver fox coat which was followed by an array of 60’s style looks that Carolina Herrera remembers all too well. I made a note to myself to buy a round-collared Jackie O box jacket – I keep seeing it over and over again in different collections.
Completely distracted by the gloriously infamous front row I couldn’t even concentrate on the show: Wintour, Andre Leon, Graydon Carter, Amy Astley, Suzy Menkes … These guys are so famous they literally look like caricatures of themselves. At the end of the show Wintour jumped up and ran out as if the place was on fire. I don’t know how she bears to even breathe the same oxygen as the common people. The hippy chic-looking PETA activists, of course, waited outside with banners and anti-fur chants. Such high drama.
Day One
Saturday, February 4th, 2006
I saw so many collections yesterday I don’t even remember half of them. Getting into the shows, even without invitations, is easy once you’re inside the tents – you just have to be nice to the staff – haha. Saw the John Varvatos show which looked like last years Burberry but in grey tones: Lenin caps, double breasted jackets, skinny leg trousers etc. One model actually looked like a male version of Gemma Ward. I was standing next to the Varvatos design interns who tried enlightening me about men’s fashion as much as they could…(The Sartorialist has some hot backstage photos – left)
Did I mention I saw the Heart Truth? Got a great view of the runway and Natalia Vodianova, who looked smashing despite the really pregnant bump. Saw all the Lindseys, Fergies, Sheryl Crows, Nelly Furtados and dozens of others who must have been famous judging by the audience reaction. Fergie is the only starlet who knows how to walk. Lohan looked cute but slightly demented. The dresses were red and symbolized “heart disease awareness”. My attention span is resistant to these things. The show had lots of great chick-flicky music so I was dancing. Fashion reporters hated me. (Photo on the left is from Dlisted)
Then I somehow got sucked into the Dragana Ognjenovic show. She’s from Slovenia. Never heard of her. She was like a really watered down Miuccia Prada circa Fall 05: the suits would be perfect for a burial ceremony. She tries to cater to the tastes of the ambassadorial wives. Blah.
Then I went to Akiko Ogawa. Liked it enough to not remember anything. I think almost every model in that show was from Russia, Ukraine or Belarus – poor victims of Soviet dentistry who never smile. Rachel Alexander, the model, was in that show. I really like her.
I wouldn’t have survived the Baby Phat show if it wasn’t for all the drinks to sedate me. My new shoes were murdering me but it was worth it because everyone was drooling over them completely jealous. (Stylist girls were leaving their business cards to call them when I remember the name of the store – ha). Kimora put on a big show which wasn’t really about the clothes – nobody wears Baby Phat, not even Kimora.
She pretty much pirated the assorted looks from last years Dior, Proenza Schouler and Balenciaga. The show biz audience was dressed to the teeth. I should have brought along my silver fox! Baby Phat models were stunningly gangly, their limbs were out of this world. To avoid being run over by the mob I split right after Kimora showed up with her kids to take the bow. She thinks she’s a real class act.
Now I have to recuperate. It was just day one!
Life After Tyra
Friday, February 3rd, 2006Our fellow blogger and fashion expert The Sartorialist never seizes to amaze us. Just look at who he accidently caught in soho the other day:
Yes, this is Kim striking her signature pose with her blonde gf from America’s Next Top Model! The Sartorialist totally rocks.
10 AM @ Promenade – John Bartlett Show
Friday, February 3rd, 2006Just came out of the John Bartlett show. The best part were the impecably groomed and fabulous men in the audience. (We, of course, managed to outqueen everyone being seated by the fresh air duct that blew our hair MTV style.)
The look on the runway was very much Anderson Cooper On Assignment. Too bad we’ll never get to actually see him in army green longjohns !
(Fashiontribes upload runway photos immediately. Beat that, style.com!)
