Aren’t We Brilliant

NYT Styles, being true to itself, is gushing over the so called “new” trend nine months too late:

Nicole Richie, MK Olsen in soon to be obsolete Supa Dupas.

“Will big glasses be over? “Not anytime soon,” snapped Belle Nguyen, a buyer for 80spurple.com, an online vendor, which does a robust business selling brands like Dita and Dior. “People are loving theses shades because they make you look hoboish in a rich way,” she said. “As trends go, this one is just getting started.”
Fashion Addict Diary, of course, knew this last year. We are total fashion psychics.

The New York Mag fashion victim of the week is Elizabeth Gabel, whose 5′8” landed her in Ford’s Models Teen Division.

We love Elizabeth’s Billy Idol pants and a badass afro but what’s with those cowboy boots in the 1000 degree New York heat?

Got Leggings?

Friday, June 17th, 2005

The things you’ll do for fashion. Despite the hot weather everyone is sporting leggings. My favorite look is leggings worn under a dress with high heels. Sassy.

Family Album by Steven Klein

Being impartial to dark genius Steven Klein (and his lovely puppies) I’m posting his July W Magazine Domestic Bliss series starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

I know, its sick how much publicity these people are getting but, wtf, that Giambattista Valli ostrich feather dress looks awesome.

Warhol Chicks

Monday, June 13th, 2005

Fall 2005 runways in many ways were a tribute to the 60’s Mod Icon Edie Sedgwick. She might look a little wacky to you, kids, but who knows what you’d look like if you did as much heroin as she did back in the day.

Most often known as artist Andy Warhol’s muse, Edie was famous for her fashion-forward looks and scene-stealing persona. Edie most often wore black and white, in mod shapes.

Alessandro Dell’Acqua, Christian Dior, Chanel, McQueen.

Balenciaga, Chanel, Stella McCarteny. Eley Kishimoto.

To feel what it was like to be a Warhol chick try pairing a white and black striped top with a black or white miniskirt. The straighter the skirt, the better. Add some chandelier earrings and black tights and the Mod look is set. To add even more drama and validity put on plenty of black liquid eyeliner and top it all of with some very sheer lipgloss (Warhol chicks used flesh colored lipstick). Then find a huge loft, decorate it with tin foil, invite a mix of drug-crazed artists, poets and socialites and you got yourself a Warhol’s factory. Yay! Oh and don’t forget to accessorize with the mod spin:

The thing for models to do now is slouch. They must think it’s refreshing and, of course “Sooo Cuuuuute!!!”

Steven Meisel’s “Slouch! Slouch MORE. I said MOOORE!”

These are the bottom of the fashion food chain. We’re soo bored. *rolls eyes*

Nicole Richie’s fashion IQ is not bad. Everyone else here is retarded! *groans*

Endless Color

Dior’s new summer collection of chic compact shadows and blushes gives you the option to wear them alone or mix and match to create your own signature look. Use all the five shades for a fashion-forward, ultra-trendy face. Don’t fret now, be daring!

The Ethnic Adventuress

This look has surprisingly early roots, dating back at least to Frieda Kahlo.

Forty years ago, you could have bought Mexican wedding dresses at the famous Fred Leighton on MacDougal Street, and you can still buy an authentic Rumanian peasant blouse at Surma on East 7th Street, though some of them are made in China. Then again, you can add something that was actually made in China from Pearl River.

A ’50s dirndl skirt, printed with scenes of the Eiffel Tower or Dutch windmills or other such far-flung locales is another alternative, and this can be found in a thrift shop—or maybe at the Prada outlet in Woodbury Common, since they made replicas of these skirts a centerpiece of their collection last spring.

As it turns out, Miuccia Prada, the doyenne of the company and a former communist herself, knows a thing or two about offbeat dressing. Last year, when she won the CFDA award, she showed up at the black-tie party in a plain little sweater and pleated skirt with a diamond tiara on her head. Now that’s bohemian.
